— from Danielle Oyama, The Western Front —
On Western’s [Western Washington University] Facebook page, a video of a blonde girl with her guitar in hand, sitting in front of a white comforter with black and purple flowers, appears on thousands of computer screens.
Press play, and a song written entirely about Western fills your ears.
“WWU, what am I going to do? WWU, how can I impress you?”
These are just a few lines from the video submitted by Mikaela Hansen, a future Western student. Hansen wrote the song about Western, trying to stand out from the crowd of other prospective students.
“When I’m inspired to do something, I write a song,” Hansen said. “I was really inspired to go to Western and I wanted to make my admission seem more special.”
Western was Hansen’s first choice because of its location, size and how friendly everyone is, she said in an email. Hansen wasn’t sure about where she wanted to go to college until she visited the campus, she said.
“From the moment I visited the campus, I knew it was where I wanted to go, and that it was right for me,” Hansen said.

WWU is a world-class institution. Now, may I skip to a related subject? While most colleges accept supplemental admissions information, did you know some colleges (few, as I know) are accepting video applications only? No transcripts; no test scores; no LORs; no essays. These are not video arts colleges either. Not for the humble, or photogenically challenged.
