— from Superintendent Eric Webb for the Orcas Island School District —
The San Juan County Sheriff’s department and an outside investigator retained by the Orcas Island School District have been conducting a comprehensive investigation of serious allegations regarding a high school teacher. The district took immediate action as soon as the allegations were made by placing the teacher on administrative leave, notifying the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department and obtaining an investigator. The OISD district continues to work closely with both investigating entities, and is unable to provide further comment or details as the investigation is currently ongoing.
The district has hired a substitute teacher with a strong background in the sciences who will be working closely with High School Principal, Kyle Freeman to provide the best learning experience for our science students.
Supt. Webb said, “The District is taking quick action but has no further information to make public at this point.”

If a teacher at the high school is engaged in criminal activity why does the school district have to retain an outside investigator? I would think that the Sheriff’s Department should be responsible for criminal investigations and if an outside agency is needed they should retain one.
This makes me sad. I though our teachers and students had evolved beyond such vile behaviors. Whichever side the crumbs land – be it true or untrue – it’s still a sad day for OISD and all those connected with our school: students, staff, and community. Let the investigations continue and may the truth be revealed.
A letter written by Rebecca Hermann has been removed from this feed. She had some personal information to share regarding her daughter and this issue, and she did not name any names. She maintained confidences which I applaud. My question: Why was her letter removed? Was there a problem with it? Was it untrue? If her letter was removed because it offended someone, then this newsfeed isn’t worth much. I don’t appreciate when speech is monitored. Will someone in charge please explain this alteration to the feed? Thank you. I served as a substitute teacher and I would always encourage students to stand strong in their Truth. I must stand in mine. Dialogue is critical to a functioning community.
Rebecca Hermann’s comment was removed because it included an unproven accusation, and thus failed to meet the standards of civility of Orcas Issues comments.
