Orcas Christian School brings generations together for Grandparents Lunch

The lunch at Orcas Christian School (OCS) was filled with conversation, laughter and familiar faces as students welcomed grandparents and other special guests for the school’s first Grandparents Lunch.

Held in celebration of Grandparents Day, the event brought around 25 grandparents and guests to campus to share a meal and spend time with OCS students.

For OCS Vice Principal Kammi Griffen, seeing the room filled with students and their loved ones was what made this event special.

“It was so beautiful to see the cafeteria full of students and their loved ones,” Griffen said. “There was such a special feeling in the room as everyone came together to celebrate our students.”

The lunch was designed to be simple. Grandparents and guests joined students for lunch, giving them an opportunity to sit together, talk and enjoy each other’s company during the school day. Rather than organizing a formal program, OCS focused on creating an opportunity for students and their guests to spend meaningful time together.

“The grandparents just came and enjoyed lunch with the students,” Griffen said. “It was a simple event, but it created some really special memories for our students.”

The event also extended beyond students who had grandparents available to attend.Several community members volunteered to join students whose grandparents were unable to make the event, ensuring those students also had someone special with whom they could share lunch.

“We had a few amazing community members volunteer to come in and eat with students who didn’t have grandparents at the event,” Griffen said. “That was such a meaningful part of the day because every student had someone there to share the experience with.”

For OCS, the inaugural Grandparents Lunch provided more than a meal. It created a chance for different generations to connect within the school community while giving students an opportunity to celebrate the grandparents and loved ones who play an important role in their lives.

“It was wonderful to see our school community come together to celebrate our students and their families,” Griffen said. “We are grateful to everyone who took the time to be part of such a special day.”

For the students, the event offered a chance to pause during the school day, share a meal with someone special and enjoy the company of family and community members.
