— from the Orcas Island Education Foundation —
Are you an artist…who likes working with children? Then the Orcas Island Education Foundation (OIEF) is looking for you!
“A-OK” (Art for Orcas Kids) is a program under OIEF. It provides talented local artists to work with students in the elementary and middle schools. The goal of “A-OK” is to inspire students and help them bring the visual arts to life through age-appropriate lessons and projects. Classes are once a week, over two 8-week sessions.
The culminating event for the creative experiences presented during this 16-week period is a fantastic art show in May displayed at the Orcas Center. This special opportunity to work with real artists and create artistic works of their own can truly be transformative in the life of a child.
The artists are paid a stipend and have a budget for materials. If you are interested in joining the roster of “A-OK” artists, please fill out the short application available as a PDF on the OIEF website. The link is in the middle of the homepage: https://oief.org Completed applications can be returned to info@oief.org
And for more information about the program, contact Geri Turnoy at: davidgeri@centurylink.net.

I’m still willing and eager to do art with elementary children in the public schools. I keep putting my name in as an eligible artist every year, but am never contacted.
I was an art docent in the elementary school for several years before the original Orcas Open Arts (art in the schools) was developed. I worked in the OOA program on and off from its inception. My special passions are recycled art and art that is process-oriented, giving the student many experiences in various media. I worked in OOA until 2012, when I was dropped from the list of artists and not asked to return. I would love to do art in the schools; have said this many times, to many people, in many ways. I’m saying it again here in a Public forum, in hopes that “A-OK” will consider me seriously interested, after a 3 year “break” from teaching art in the schools.
I left my contact information with the A-OK email and contact list at the May art opening at Orcas Center. Looking forward to hearing from you.
