The best part of living on Orcas is the support we give each other in the community.
This past Wednesday I served a meal at the cafeteria with food all grown locally on the island. I couldn’t have done it without the help of lots of friends and family.
First, I want to thank John Steward from Maple Rock Farm. He’s like having a farmer and an Uncle all rolled into one. A big thanks to Dante Miller for showing me how to turn simple ingredients into something delicious. Also, thanks to John and Joni of Roses for providing me with a place to prep my food.
I couldn’t have done it without the fresh food donated by the people at Coffelt Farm. Thank you to Zach, Debbie, and Bing at the school cafeteria for working alongside me on Wednesday and for putting up with all my questions for the last six months.
Also, thanks to Madie Murray of Farm to Cafeteria, she cheered me on all the way. And then there’s Alexa who came out and filmed the whole project.
And of course, thanks to my parents for having me in the first place.
Finally, thank you to all my classmates and community members who weren’t afraid to eat my cooking.
I love you all.
Huxley Smart.

Dropped by the school cafeteria for lunch today. There was left over Shepard’s pie. It was delicious a couple days later. Nice job!
