To the members of our County Council,
We just wanted to express how important the Orcas Rec programs have been for the youth on our island. We have three children who attend many Orcas Rec programs each year. We asked them recently to name their favorite and most memorable events outside of school and unanimously, all three named Orcas Rec activities – swimming, sailing, circus camp, theater camp, soccer, wacky wednesday — to name a few.
While we certainly love living on these islands, it would be hardly the same without such activities for children. When we were considering moving our business here 8 years ago, the fact that the community cared for the kids and provided places for them to go with safe structured activities, made us feel good about raising our children here and weighed heavily in our decision to relocate here.
Eastsound would be an entirely different place if all the kids that are now engaged in Orcas Rec programs and activities were instead left to fend for themselves after school.

Susan Stoltz

Thanks for speaking up for Island Rec, David and Susan. I have been an early and longtime advocate for our Rec. Program, as a founding board member and the second Island Rec. Director.
Didier has done a terrific job developing the relationships and programs our island children and families enjoy. Every year the programs are subject to cancellation because Orcas, unlike Friday Harbor, doesn’t have a secure and supportive funding source.
Maybe it’s time for Orcas Islanders to consider how to generate sustainable funding for the Rec. Program and The Fun House, assuring our precious resources, island kids, have our continuing support.
