||| FROM RICK HUGHES |||
Hello, my name is Rick Hughes, and I live on Orcas Island. My wife and I operate Ray’s General Store and Pharmacy, Con’s Pit Stop and Island Life on Orcas and I served for eight years as the San Juan County Council member from district #2, Orcas and Waldron Islands. I have known Sheriff Krebs for over a decade, consider him a good friend and was a great partner in operating San Juan County for the 6 years we served together as elected officials.
Ron is approachable, honest, honorable and a good person. He has served our community well, hired excellent deputies, dispatch and civil staff and has not asked for additional funding to keep the county safe.
Ron is the right person for the sheriff job and will continue to be the solid Sheriff that we need, he will continue to serve all of the community, and encourage his staff to find balanced approach to community law enforcement.
He has my full support! Please join me and vote for Ron Krebs, San Juan County Sheriff.

Perhaps the Sheriff could directly address the recent incident with a knife wielding robber caught in the act not being pursued nor subsequently located. Lots of people in Deer Harbor were rightfully worried about an armed suspect loose in the area. Perhaps there were extenuating circumstances but if the public isn’t accurately and promptly informed, how do we know? According to the sheriffs blotter on this site, the deputy let the suspect get away and then failed to locate him subsequently. How did this happen? Sheriff Krebs has had many years to develop the department as he sees fit and if this incident is representative of his best, then it looks like we need improvement. At the very least, we need better public communication from the sheriff’s office.
Ken,
I am sorry you missed the news. We immediately put out a press release which was featured here. on the Orcasonian as well as the Sounder.
https://theorcasonian.com/sheriffs-office-on-the-lookout-for-this-burglary-suspect-on-orcas/ and also https://www.islandssounder.com/news/man-wanted-for-burglary-and-weapon-possession/
We also put it our on our social media page here –

and then we did another press release again when he was apprehended.
“Honest” and “Honorable”……huh. I mean, many examples present of how inaccurate this statement is but perhaps the most glaring was the camera incident. Manipulating a camera and then lying about it UNDER OATH. He’s lucky he’s buddies with the prosecutor. In other counties he would be prosecuted himself. He should, at a minimum, be Brady Listed. Again, as the law requires the prosecutor submit for Brady so……
Anyway, not sure why I bother to comment. San Juan county has proven over and over that the “good ‘old boy always done it this way” wins no matter how egregious the behavior.
