WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) released the below statement in response to House Republicans’ extreme health spending bill (H.R. 5894), which includes several anti-choice provisions:

“MAGA Republicans are more concerned about restricting reproductive health care than protecting families,” said Larsen. “Instead of working toward a harmful national abortion ban, Congress must protect and expand safe reproductive health care and enable families to choose what is best for them.”

How the House GOP Bill Hurts Northwest Washington Families

The extreme House GOP bill restricts several successful reproductive health care initiatives that families rely on. The bill:

  • Defunds Planned Parenthood – The bill eliminates funding for Planned Parenthood, which would block people from accessing critical preventive services like sexually transmitted infections testing, breast and cervical cancer screenings, contraception and sex education at Planned Parenthood health centers like those in Everett, Lynnwood, Bellingham, Mount Vernon and Friday Harbor.
  • Eliminates Title X Family Planning Funding and Information – The bill eliminates critical funding for Title X, which provides lifesaving preventative care, including contraceptive services, cancer screenings, and sexually transmitted infections testing and treatment. In addition, the bill curtails the availability of information related to abortion, including referrals, in some areas.
  • Restricts Access to Abortion Care After Dobbs Decision – The bill blocks implementation of Executive Orders aimed at expanding access to abortion and other reproductive health care services for people hurt by state abortion bans following the misguided Dobbs decision.

Larsen’s Efforts to Protect the Right to Choose, Reproductive Health Care

Larsen is a champion of ensuring access to abortion and reproductive health care nationwide. Larsen supports suspending the filibuster to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which re-establishes a nationwide right to abortion and enshrines the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law. He also supports protecting a doctor’s ability to prescribe medication abortion via telehealth to reach patients across the country, including in rural communities.
