Session 1: Rabbits
On Saturday January 29th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first in a series of classes on the humane harvesting of small livestock will take place.
The class will be held at the Deer Harbor Environmental Learning Camp for a cost of $20. (Useful barter items or services will be accepted, make offer. No one will be turned away for lack of funds).
Space is somewhat limited, and we also need to have some idea of how many people will attend. Those interested in attending are asked to contact Ken Wood, class instructor, to reserve a spot so we know what to expect. Ken’s number is 376-4642.
What we’ll cover: Class will include knife sharpening and a real-time demonstration of rabbit skinning, followed by guided hands-on practice. Everyone who wants to will have a chance to perform one or more aspects of the process.
Preparing the meat for food and utilizing the whole animal, hide, etc. will be covered, as well as other issues pertaining to small livestock raising and harvest. Some rabbit will be cooked on the spot. We’ll have a follow-up question and answer session before we end with lunch and socializing. There’s nothing like some good fresh meat to raise your spirits!
Lunch: We will be able to taste some rabbit, but everyone should bring a potluck item to contribute to lunch. If you are going to eat, please bring your own plate/bowl and eating utensil as disposables will not be provided.
What to Bring: Knife and sharpening stone (we’ll have extra for those who don’t have one), plate and eating utensil, potluck item, clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty (just in case). Contact Ken Wood at 376-4642.
