— by Carol Kulminski for the Orcas Historical Museums —
Boyd C. Pratt has recently published a book called Lime: Quarrying and Limemaking in the San Juan Islands. Boyd is a popular speaker and has presented outstanding programs for the Orcas Island Historical Museums in the past.
His book speaks about the successful limemaking industry in the San Juans. Formed through eons of geologic time and sculpted by glaciers, the limestone deposits along the islands’ shore provided the essential ingredient for the block and mortar that built and rebuilt the West Coast’s major cities.
Come and hear about the islands’ economic booms and busts, dramatic changes to the landscape, bloody murder, contentious lawsuits, and deadly shipwrecks. The History Matinee is Sunday, October 22, at 3 p.m. in the Eastsound Fire Station. This is a free community event sponsored by the Orcas Island Historical Museums.
