— from Amy Scarton for Washington State Ferries —

ECHO Program Manager Krista Trounce, WSF Environmental Program Manager Kevin Bartoy, and BC Ferries Environmental Manager Leslie James speaking at the 2018 GreenTech conference..

Earlier this month, Environmental Program Manager Kevin Bartoy attended the 2018 GreenTech annual conference hosted by Green Marine. Kevin participated on a panel that discussed underwater noise in the Salish Sea. WSF has actively participated in studies through the Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation (ECHO) program that monitor underwater ferry noise and its effect on marine life. WSF will be joining the Green Marine organization whose goal is to environmentally certify North American marine industry programs by collecting data and tracking performance metrics related to environmental programs.

In addition to our new partnership with Green Marine, I continue to serve on the Governor’s Southern Resident Killer Whale Task Force that met for the second time on Thursday. This week, we reviewed preliminary input from our working groups on the topics of underwater noise, prey availability, and water pollution.
