The Funhouse Commons is thrilled to announce Jesse Fabrikant will be joining us as our new Mentor Program Coordinator! Jesse moved to Orcas Island from Davis, California in 2019 when his partner was offered a job at Sucia State Marine Park.
Fabrikant shares: “We moved without ever having visited the islands and I quickly became attracted by the power of the natural landscape and the engagement of the Orcas community towards preserving and improving their shared home.”
Having worked as a public health economist and a chainsaw crew lead, completed a master’s degree in political economy and served on the board of a cooperative low income housing association, Jesse joins The Funhouse with a diverse skill set at the intersection of social science, social work, and youth leadership.
As the Mentor Program’s steward, he will be supporting meaningful mentoring relationships throughout the community. “A truly thriving community requires everyone within it to be thriving. With youth mentorship, we have an opportunity to facilitate growing a stronger and healthier generation of islanders, ultimately creating a better environment for us all to live in,: states Fabrikant.
The Mentor Program is a community service with a long history on Orcas Island, pairing caring community members with youth who could benefit from an additional supporting adult in their lives. The pandemic has allowed the program to take a step back and reflect on how it can better serve Orcas youth. As we tip-toe towards a post-pandemic world, the Mentor Program is excited to resume in person activities such as mentor training events and mentor/mentee parties.
The community is invited to contact Jesse at (360) 818-4368 or jesse@thefunhouse.org.
