A state ferry was stranded at the Anacortes terminal for hours overnight after a large truck got stuck halfway onto the ferry, officials said.

The ferry Yakima was loading vehicles for its 8:25 p.m. departure Friday when a large medical imaging truck became high-centered — stuck on the bridge that connects the dock to the ferry — said Washington State Ferries spokesman Broch Bender.

The truck’s front end was stuck on the ferry and its trailer was stuck on the bridge due to the tide going out, Bender said. As a result, the truck couldn’t back up or go forward – and the ferry couldn’t be moved.

While the Yakima’s crew waited for a large tow truck to arrive, they worked to free the truck – which they were finally able to do at 1:20 a.m. Saturday using boards and wedges to separate the truck and trailer and get it back on the dock side.

The vessel was finally able to depart at 1:25 a.m. Saturday. A tow truck then arrived to get the truck and trailer back together, Bender said.

During the lengthy ordeal, the ferry was unable to off-load any other vehicles due to security issues — so anyone who had driven on had to stay with their vehicles the whole time.

Walk-on passengers were able to leave the ferry sometime between 9 and 11 p.m.
