Thursday, March 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the Senior Center
— from the Eastsound Planning and Review Committee —
The Eastsound Planning and Review Committee (EPRC), the Orcas Chamber of Commerce, and the County Council, represented by Rick Hughes, invite you to a town meeting to identify and consider things that can be done to enhance or even improve the Eastsound village character that we all love so much.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, March 26th, from 6-8pm at the Senior Center.
The first part of the meeting will offer an opportunity to initiate what we hope will be a new series of discussions about how Islanders want Eastsound to look and function in the coming years.
There will be open discussion from 6pm until about 7:10 p.m. on the following questions:
- what do you currently like about Eastsound? (20 minutes)
- what don’t you like about Eastsound? (20 minutes)
- what are some elements of your ideal Eastsound–3 years from now? 30 years from now? ….taking into account that Eastsound will likely have increasing numbers of tourists in the coming years
Following the discussion, Rick Hughes will give a County Council update on many of the topics below for about 10 minutes. Following Rick’s update, you will have an opportunity to talk with EPRC members, Chamber reps and Rick, as well as view materials and offer your thoughts on:
- “streetscape” designs
- the proposed Eastsound sub-area plan revisions
- a survey with questions about your vision for Eastsound
- pedestrian path lighting
- storm-water plans
- proposed Fern Street changes
- how to provide for adequate parking in the summer
- public bathrooms
- heights of buildings
- possible need for more “in-town” senior housing
- affordable rent
- long term rental shortage
- economic development
- mooring buoys to facilitate increased marine access to town
Come and let your voice be heard on the future of your town!

Margie; the future is for the young !! The average age on Orcas is now over 60, For various reasons, most of us will not be here in ten years, so the future of the Eastsound community MUST be determined by my son’s generation, and, on behalf of my grandson’s generation.
I emphasize this so as to suggest that you encourage those younger folks within our town to join the meeting and participate for their own benefit. The older folks, like me, can offer perspective and be the institutional memory. We should not, however, be the driving opinions going forward.
