The more you learn about L& I the more you will wonder why anyone even bothers trying to start or operate a small business. Government regulations and paperwork for a small construction company required a half day of bookkeeper time per week even twenty years ago; I can only imagine how bad it is now. All the “rules and regulations” generated, not by our legislature, but by state agencies, add so much expense to operating a small business that either the business has to get really big or operate under the table. An under-reported source of inflation of the cost of goods and services are all these costs of business that perforce, are passed along to the customer/client.
Clearly businesses need to follow sane health and safety guidelines, but the MASSIVE amount of time it takes to comply with all the levels of government regulations that, while perhaps well intentioned, actually only succeed in discouraging small businesses while still failing to contain the worst excesses of the giant corporations.
