— from Jan Jacobson for the Orcas Garden Club —

c010bb081ab3e9a6f090c7156a125c18[1]Kristina Bayas and Diana Brooks will explain the basics of composting, with and without worms. Learn how composting works, what kind of organisms do the work for you, optimal conditions to make the magic happen, and easy directions to get you started now.

Diana left the RIGHT coast, beautiful dogwood and azalea springs, for the LEFT after college (Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia). She immediately fell in love with the west coast and knew that was where her heart was. After teaching high school Spanish in Seattle for 12 years, Diana retired to San Juan Island with her husband and a bucket list. Number one on the list was to become a Master Gardener. She did and her passion is composting, vermi-composting in particular.

Kris was raised in Alaska and received her BS degree in Environmental Science from Oregon State University. After college she served in the Peace Corps in Ecuador working with natural resources projects. She is a Master Gardener who worked as the San Juan County Master Gardener Program Coordinator for 10 years before taking on the task of the Extension office management. Composting and all things gardening are her passions.

Kristina and Diana will have a raffle for a worm bin after the presentation. They are also bringing a microscope to set up for seeing the micro-organisms in the finished compost. This meeting should be fun and informative. The meeting is Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Madrona Room of Orcas Center. For more information see orcasislandgardenclub.org.
