Charlie Groth (pronounced Grow-T) folk troubadour all the way from Jacksonville, Florida, will entertain at the Orcas Grange, Saturday, September 18th at 7:30 p.m.

Charlie is an accomplished musician who knows how to connect with a wide variety of audiences.  Known for his easy-going, intimate, and positive on-stage manner, he always presents his shows with intelligence and relaxed good humor.

The music Charley plays is an eclectic brew.  Western swing (Bob Wills and Hank Penny for example), ragtime (Fats Waller, Eubie Blake and Louis Armstrong), Texas country (Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson), folk (Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot) and blues (Gary Davis, Leadbelly), plus some of Charley’s own original songs, may all be included in his shows.

Charley plays guitar and mandolin in styles ranging from vintage jazz and swing, to Piedmont-style blues, to Doc Watson-style flatpicking, to old-time/traditional folk music.  Guaranteed he’ll have you tapping your toes to the rhythms and singing along on the oldies.

Opening for Charlie will be regular Orcas visitor Carl Allen of the Wanderers.  Carl is an old-time folk singer, best known for his repertoire and impersonations of Woody Guthrie.  Carl performed in June for the Orcas Museum’s Journey Stories event series.

Admission for both Charlie and Carl will be $12.  If you can’t catch their show Saturday, they will only be a ferry ride away Sunday, 2 p.m. at the Shaw Island Community Center.  For info, call Bill Buchan at 376-3613.
