The Orcas Island sub-unit of the League of Women Voters of the San Juan Islands will sponsor an Election Forum on Wednesday, October 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Orcas Island Senior Center in Eastsound.

Invitations have been issued for the contested positions of:

Port Commissioner 2, a two-year term:

  1. Dwight Gus
  2. Gary Abood

Port Commissioner 3, a four-year term:

  1. Al Edwards
  2. Sheldon Gregory

Sewer and Water Commissioner 5:

  1. Roger Adams
  2. Rollie Sauer

Also invited to the LWV Election Forum are Pro and Con speakers for the San Juan County propositions:

  • Extension through 2026 of Conservation Area Real Estate Excise Tax
  • Solid Waste User Charge for Management of Solid Waste

and representatives in support of, and in opposition to,  the Orcas Island School District proposal:

  • Orcas Island School District #137 One Year Capital Projects Levy

The County Charter Review Commissioner candidates have been invited to attend and will be introduced from the audience.

The Charter Review candidates from County Council District 4 (four candidates elected) are:

  1. Bob Gamble
  2. Bill Appel
  3. Ed Sutton
  4. Ralph Gutschmidt

From County Council District 5 (three candidates elected):

  1. Linda Tretheway
  2. Moana Kutsche
  3. Leonard Wood
  4. Steve Garrison

Those candidates who have filed but are in uncontested elections on Orcas Island will also be invited and introduced:

  • Barbara Bedell for Orcas Island Fire Commissioner
  • Janet Brownell for Orcas Island School Board Director
  • Brian Ehrmantraut for Port of Orcas Commissioner
  • Martha Farish for Orcas Island Park and Recreation District Commissioner
  • Dave Mowry for Eastsound Sewer and Water District Commissioner
  • Jim Sullivan for Orcas Island School Board Director
  • Vicki Vandermay for Orcas Island Park and Recreation District Commissioner

The League of Women Voters of the San Juans realized the largest increase in membership throughout the state in 2009-2010, through the jump in numbers of members from Orcas Island. Election forums, education and voter registration have been the focus of the Orcas sub-unit. They registered voters and celebrated the 80th anniversary of the League of Women Voters at the Historical Days Fair on the Village Green in Eastsound last July.

Mail and online voter registration must be postmarked or  completed by Oct. 10. The deadline for in-person registration is Oct. 3o. The General Election will be held Nov. 8.
