Build Financial Confidence | Space still available in Orcas Money Smart

There is still time to register for Orcas Money Smart, a practical 7-month financial education program from Orcas Community Resource Center that helps community members build financial confidence and make informed decisions about saving, spending, borrowing, and protecting their money.

Now in its fifth year, Orcas Money Smart offers a welcoming space for participants to strengthen everyday financial skills and better understand the choices that shape their financial well-being. Participants who complete the program may be eligible to receive a stipend of up to $500.

Whether someone wants to create a cushion for unexpected expenses, save for a car or home, reduce financial stress, or simply have more breathing room between paychecks, the program provides practical tools to help them move forward.

Participants will learn how to compare banking products, avoid unnecessary fees, understand how compound interest can help savings grow, and evaluate loans and credit cards more thoughtfully. The program also covers budgeting, planning for surprise expenses, and recognizing scams, phishing attempts, and identity theft.

Financial topics can often feel overwhelming, especially when people are trying to sort through debt, savings goals, or monthly expenses. Orcas Money Smart is designed to make those decisions feel more manageable by helping participants understand their options, ask good questions, and take the next step with greater confidence.

The program is open to people at any stage of their financial journey. No previous financial education is required. Whether participants are opening their first savings account, working to manage debt, saving for a dream vacation, or trying to better understand where their money goes each month, Money Smart meets them where they are.

Community members are also encouraged to invite a friend, partner, family member, or coworker to join them. Learning alongside someone familiar can make financial conversations easier and help participants stay motivated as they build new habits and skills.

Those who have attended an Orcas Talks Money workshop or participated in Money Smart in the past are encouraged to help spread the word. A personal invitation may be just the encouragement someone needs to take that first step.
