Kids create at the cardboard camp with Brook Meinhardt next weekend
San Juan Islands Museum of Art presents “Cardboard Camp for Kids” with Brook Meinhardt next weekend (May 23 and 24) from noon to 4 p.m. for ages 7 to 12
Cardboard Camp is an opportunity to explore corrugated cardboard at length. Students will learn about the many things we can do with this ordinary material by creating various projects such as self portraits and more. We’ll touch on some basic anatomy, color theory and perspective in this compact Cardboard Camp!
ALL of the cardboard we use is from local island businesses – absolutely EVERYTHING was saved from the dump!
About the teacher, Brook Meinhardt
For most of her career, Brook has been a freelance illustrator specializing in portraits of celebrities and politicians for major newspapers and magazines. She works in mixed media, constructing three-dimensional portraits, primarily from cardboard and wood. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, New York Times, New York Times Sunday Magazine, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, TIME magazine, and Wall Street Journal amongst many others. Her commercial clients include The Gap, Microsoft, MTV, Pottery Barn, Old Navy, Barney’s New York, and Sephora.
Brook was born and raised in New York City where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Parsons School of Art. She has also studied at The Cooper Union, The School of Visual Arts and The Art Students League, all in NYC.
Brook lives on Orcas Island, where she continues her work in 3-D sculpture, paints and draws the beautiful local landscapes. Her drawings can be found at Crow Valley Pottery on Orcas. She teaches art workshops for children and adults at The Funhouse and at Orcas Art Studios.
Kids should wear clothing that can get a bit messy with glue, paint and oil pastels. All they need to bring is a snack (we take a snack break at the half way point) and a positive attitude !
