Annual gathering for oyster lovers and cyclists all day long Sept. 27
— by Margie Doyle —
The fabled Anacortes Oyster Run motorcycle event takes place tomorrow, as always on the fourth Sunday of September. Washington State Ferries estimates “the event will bring 15,000 or more participants to all of our northern ferry routes.”
Oyster Run organizers say, “We don’t care what you ride, we don’t care if you drive, walk or swim!
“This is a free event! No time schedule, No required route, No official starting point. Whether your 9 days or 99 years old, everyone is welcome!” (from the website www.oysterrun.org )
The Oyster Run started in 1981 with a few guys getting together at the end of the summer to go for a ride and eat some oysters. Now the one-day event runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with several blocks of Anacortes’ downtown streets reserved for motorcycle parking, vendors, food, music and general good times.
There are no scheduled routes and visitors are invited to stop at “Oyster Biker Friendly” places. (to see the full list– which includes places from Edmonds to Bellingham and from Kirkland to Oak Harbor — click HERE)
Throughout the day there will be entertainment with music by The Unfaithful Servants, The Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Drill Team, The Whidbey Island Rollergirls and other events.
