Saturday, June 26th, our community was at last able to recognize the generosity of the Henigson Family, by celebrating the memory of husband, father, and devoted runner, Bob Henigson, with the dedication of the new OISD track and a Fun Run/BBQ in his honor.

Thirty plus folks turned out on one of the hottest days of the year to commemorate the occasion.

School Superintendent Eric Webb.

The festivities began with speeches by Superintendent Eric Webb and Bob’s wife, Phyllis. Eric Webb relayed some of the history leading up to the successful efforts to finally build a track along with a new playing field at OISD; beginning in 2015. Thanks to Phyllis Henigson; her resolve to financially support the effort, and the terrific support by the Orcas voters of a levy, the school district was finally able to move forward on realizing a long held dream.

Phyllis spoke lovingly of her late husband’s passion for running. She confided that prior to moving to Orcas, Bob’s routine was to run every morning at their local high school track in southern California. And Bob loved competing in races — even to the point of collapse at one of them! But Bob won that race and managed to get that gold medal around his neck.

Phyllis was delighted to see the OISD track being used by people of all ages — from young people running for athletic conditioning, to older folks needing a safe and stable surface to walk on.

Phyllis  wrapped her remarks up with this: “This track is truly a place for all of us!” The ribbon was cut with the ceremonial scissors, and the Fun Run began with participants of all ages.
