In recognition of Poetry Month, and to celebrate our treasure trove of Orcas Island poets, Orcas Issues is pleased and honored to offer daily poetry during April.

TRAFFIC COUNT ON WINDWARD WAY, DEER HARBOR
— by Sara Williams —

On the sound: One float plane, engine throbbing
One skiff, skipper semaphoring
One motor sailer skims past, bare of mast.
One band of kayak novices shovels
at the sea, behind a mama mallard of a guide.
To the east, one pony cart trotting behind
One horse cart trotting, hoofbeats echo
from distant hills, setting wings to rhythm:
one flock of Canada geese, cackling,
soars in v-formation.
On Windward way, propped
on trekking poles, one lone hiker, resting.
