In addition to savory appetizers from local restaurants, and premium wine selected by local expert Chimo Boehm, Orcas musicians will play starring roles at this year’s Spring Auction on April 30, from 6 to 9 PM, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Parish Hall.
Popular music teacher, Mary Giampietro, returns this year to kick off the event with her fiddle and ukulele. Later in the evening, fresh back on Orcas for the summer, Holland based husband-and-wife duo “This is lizzard” will play songs from their newly released debut album, “Won’t Give Up.”
Lead singer and lyricist Lizanne Hennessey has Orcas Island roots. Her mother, Sara, substitute teaches at the Montessori school. Lizanne’s husband, Roland Stolk, is an accomplished Dutch musician and composer. While the music of “This is lizzard” is based on pop, they also incorporate a mix of their favorite genres such as rock, reggae, country, and Celtic. Hennessey says: “When Roland and I met, we found out pretty quickly what it is we do best together: making music. We formed ‘This is lizzard’ in 1998 and have never stopped making music since.”
Joe Gaydos will be auctioning off services donated by the school’s families and friends.
Offerings include a sailboat day cruise, 500 board feet of custom-cut lumber, three hours of excavation and chipping services, and more. Bidders will also have the opportunity to purchase needed items for the school.
Tickets are available at Darvill’s Bookstore, the Orcas Montessori School (April 25-29 only), or online at www.OrcasMontessori.org for $35 each, or $20 without the wine tasting. Childcare will be available onsite by prearrangement for $5.
Orcas Montessori School, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, provides a dynamic three-year educational program for 2 ½ to 6-year-olds. The school was founded in 1988 and is dedicated to helping children develop self-motivation and independent thinking skills.
