This is a wildcat strike.
The only real question is WHY.
It’s unions (Engineers and Deck) negation time. They want larger pay raises than the state is willing to give them.
This year the two unions decided to concentrate crew shortages on the central Puget Sound commuter routes rather than our San Juan “recreation” routes.
WSF workers can’t strike by state law, but they can fail to show up for work and dispatchers can’t find replacements.
I believe WSF has the largest number of ferry crew personnel they have ever had, but they stopped providing those numbers to the public about two years ago.
