“Because if you wait long enough on Orcas, everything will come to you.” – an Orcas islander
||| BY LIN MCNULTY, EDITOR |||
I like that I am able to sit and wait for the world to come to me, rather than be on a mad scramble to see all there is before I depart the earthly plane. That is made all the more possible by the fact that I live on an island that attracts things and people I would never see in a normal mainland America world. I’m sure they each may have their moments. I’m just gloating about the happenings that come my way.
So, on Wednesday (late afternoon-ish as I recall), I noticed a mast visible over the top of the hill north of Rosario. When I checked on Vessel Finder to see what was there, the M5 (which seems a woosy name for the tallest ship) was discovered.
My curious research revealed that the M5 is the world’s largest single masted sailing ship.
The 75-metre luxury yacht M5, also known as the Mirabella V, is the world’s largest single-masted sailing yacht, with its mast reaching 86 metres tall, according to a profile on Boat International.
Built in 2004 at an estimated cost of $50 million USD, the yacht is now owned by Texas-based billionaire Rodney Lewis.
One more trip down the research funnel told me all kinds of info I didn’t know I wanted to know, including the factum that M5’s stern was lengthened in the 2013 refit to accommodate a carbon fibre float plane. Yes, there’s that.
That’s all I know about it, but it’s still off-shore Rosario if anyone wants to have a look. And there is more to this story and some gorgeous pictures in clicking the links above.
I love Orcas!

Clearly we need to raise taxes. Fascinating boat but morally appalling that anyone has $50M to waste on a toy.
Couldn’t agree more. Beautiful and awesome, but think about the housing that could’ve been built instead of this ship…

i’m not ready to say it to the fuel tankers that travel rosario strait – but they are marvelous machines – but kudos to the designers builders and owners of this boat

good for the owner. a well deserved perk for his obvious ingenuity and hard work.
The M5 was anchored around the same spot for a few days last year, as well. Most impressive. Lewis made his fortune choosing the right land in Texas to drill for oil and gas–he’s a “wildcatter.” He also owns a collection of 35 airplanes, including WWII vintage P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning and a B-29 bomber… all of which he can fly. Billionaires certainly can develop interesting hobbies, even if they are not even on the Forbes 400 lists, with just a measly billion or two in assets…
