— from Suzanne Olson —
Sandi Burt, MSW, Suzanne Olson and Serena Burman will be teaching the OWL Program again this year for 7-9th graders. Parents can learn more at the parent information meeting Tuesday, October 14th at 6:30pm at the OPALCO meeting room. The program includes five girls and five boys. There is currently a waiting list for girls, but any parents who are interested are encouraged to attend.
Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.
Suzanne, Sandi & Serena… Would like to let you know of an additional resource that might prove helpful in working your program. Earlier in the spring, I listened to an interesting program on the Diane Rehm radio show. She conducted an interview with Jane Fonda. Jane had just published a book titled ‘Being a Teen: Everything teen girls & boys should know about relationships, Sex,Love,Health, Identity & more’ & she was promoting her book. To make a long story short, I ordered the book thru our ILL library system, read it & then suggested our library have the title on our shelves. The book is now part of our library & available to be checked out. You might wish to check it out & see for yourselves if it could fit &/or enhance your own program. I congratulate all three of you for forging ahead on this series of topics… in my view, truly very important. Inaccurate or misunderstood information on this subject can have life-altering consequences at any age, especially young people.
Thanks, Robin – we’ll check it out!
