Explore ancient connections between land, river, salmon, orca
— from Tracie Merrill for The Whale Museum —
The Whale Museum is holding an “In-Depth” Workshop over the weekend of October 18-20, 2019. The course begins on Friday afternoon and runs through Sunday afternoon. It includes evening lectures on Friday and local day field trips on Saturday and Sunday. Classroom presentations will take place in Port Angeles. The intent is to learn about the Elwha River and explore the ancient connections between Southern Resident Orcas, Chinook salmon, and their mutual interdependence on intact ecosystems. This workshop is ideal for those wishing to continue their education as a naturalist or for those who simply have an interest in learning about these topics.
Join us in this journey from the tops of pristine watersheds through newly restored river scape and expanding floodplain to the Salish Sea. See firsthand the healing and transformation of perhaps the most important run of Chinook salmon for Southern Resident Orcas, as we dive into the ecology, history and lore of this ancient relationship. A field trip to the Salmon Cascades of the Sol Duc River is included, where returning Coho salmon can be seen from late September into early November.
Workshop is limited to 20 participants so reserve your spot soon! Tuition includes: transportation to all field locations from Port Angeles; Reception on Friday evening; Lunches on Saturday and Sunday; Dinners on Friday and Saturday. Tuition is $325 for Museum/SSAMN members/Orca Adopters or $375 for non-members.
Registration and a draft agenda is available at The Whale Museum or via the website, https://whalemuseum.org/products/deepdiveworkshop. For more information or to register, contact Tracie Merrill at (360) 378-4710 ext. 23 or via email at tracie@whalemuseum.org.
