The Whale Museum is thrilled to welcome Dr. Caroline Fox from Sidney, BC, on Tuesday, July 11 for a presentation and book signing at the museum! Beginning at 6 p.m., a reception will precede the presentation. Caroline Fox is a conservation scientist, educator, and advocate for nature. Dr. Fox is the author of At Sea with Marine Birds of the Raincoast; copies are available in the museum’s gift shop.
Dr. Fox’s lecture will focus on her research which generally focuses on the ecology of marine predators, including birds, in coastal ecosystems, species at risk, and assessments of human impacts. Spending months surveying birds in the volatile waters adjacent to the Great Bear Rainforest, Caroline Fox and a team from Raincoast Conservation Foundation set out to complete one of the largest marine bird and mammal surveys in a region increasingly threatened by human activities. Weaving together the scientific results of the survey together with the natural history of birds, including those in the Salish Sea, you’ll meet some of the coast’s more secretive species. Dr. Fox will also be reading from her book and will be available to sign copies.
The next day, we have a special opportunity to go on a bird walk with Dr. Fox. At 8:00 am on July 12, Dr. Fox will be joined by Barbara Jensen, President of the local chapter of the National Audubon Society, for this birding excursion. Interested birders should meet at 8 a.m. in the parking lot at the NPS Visitor Center at American Camp. Participants should provide their own transportation but car-pooling is encouraged.
