EDMONDS, Wash. — A Washington State ferry appeared to rock back and forth significantly in a video captured during a voyage in Edmonds Tuesday.
;Washington State Ferries (WSF) confirmed the incident to KOMO News after speaking to the captain.
The major swell came from a large Navy ship departing Everett, according to WSF.
The WSF said the Navy vessel was going 25 knots, and its large wake created choppy water after it turned into the traffic lanes.
“At the speed the ferry was going, they would not have been able to rock the vessel like that on their own,” WSF told KOMO News in a statement.
Twenty-five knots is the equivalent of about 28.8 mph. Cruise ships typically cruise at only 18 to 20 knots, according to Royal Caribbean.
The speed of the Navy ship is not far from “high speed,” which the United States defines as more than 35 knots.
Gillian Young captured a video of the wobbling vessel from the shore, describing the situation as “bizarre.”
“The Kingston to Edmonds ferry, packed with cars and people, was literally trying to capsize itself in perfectly calm water,” Young wrote in an Instagram post. “New nautical fear unlocked. I seriously may never go on a ferry again!”
