OCS students explore ‘Love in Action’ through service

Middle and high school students at Orcas Christian School recently heard from guest speakers about serving others and putting their faith into action.

Lauren Lombard, who coordinates service mission work abroad with the nonprofit education group EducareNow, spoke with students about serving communities through practical acts of compassion. Following her presentation, students worked in breakout groups to develop ways they could serve and show love to the Orcas Island community.

Students will use ideas developed during the breakout sessions to help shape community service activities during OCS’ fall and spring service days.

Students also heard from Dr. Michael Duehrssen, a mission pilot who served marginalized Indigenous communities internationally by flying in medical care and other support. Duehrssen shared stories of his work and emphasized the importance of showing actionable love to people who are often overlooked or forgotten.

Reflecting on the presentations, one student said, “The stories from the guest speakers helped me see how often you can show love in action.”

Throughout the school year, OCS students will continue looking for ways to put that message into practice as part of the school’s theme, “Love in Action.”
