Actors Theater of Orcas Island is pleased to present Waiting for MacArthur, a full-length play by Paullette MacDougal for two weeekends later this month.
This play, set in the months just before and after the American entry into World War Two, follows Annie Lou Holsom, a young and naïve nurse, played by Sandy Thompson, as she joins the Army to do her familial and national duty.
As the war rages in the Pacific, Annie is stationed on the island of Corregidor, General MacArthur’s fortress in the Philippines. This becomes the setting for Annie’s maturation, fleeting moments of joy and her indescribable despair at the human cost of war.
Waiting for MacArthur is a powerful play told through letters between Annie Lou and her family, with her mother played by Louise Carnachan, her best friend, played by Aaimee Johnson and her favorite teacher, played by Patty Monaco. Each of these women weathers the war in her own way, never to be the same.
Waiting For MacArthur is directed by Doug Bechtel. It opens on Friday, June 19th at the Grange with additional performances on Saturday, June 20th, Friday, June 26th, Saturday, June 27th and Sunday, June 28th.
On closing night, Sunday, June 28th, the playwright, Paullette MacDougal, will be come to Orcas to see her play.
All shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at Darvill’s or at the door. The intense emotional nature of this play make it unsuitable for younger children. For additional information, contact Doug Bechtel at 317-5601 or doug@orcasactors.com.
