Town Burn Ban

The San Juan County Fire Marshal, in partnership with local Fire Districts, declared a high fire danger in the
unincorporated areas of San Juan County on July 05, 2024. This is due to current and predicted dry weather
conditions.

The Town is reminding residents and visitors that outdoor burning is generally prohibited year-round within Town limits in accordance with State Law. Friday Harbor Municipal Code Chapter 9.16 addresses current regulations and allowable activities.

• No outdoor burning is allowed except for cooking fires in contained barbecue units and recreational fires.
  A “recreational” fire is defined as follows:
  • All materials to be burned must be properly placed in an approved container.
  • Materials being burned must be either charcoal or clean seasoned firewood.
  • Portable containers for recreational fires shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and shall not be operated on a combustible deck.
  • All recreational fires shall be constantly attended and supervised by a competent adult until the fire is
  extinguished and cold.
  • Means of extinguishing the fire must be readily available, such as a charged hose, fire extinguisher or other accepted practice.
  • There shall be no fires within 25 feet of any structure or combustible dry material or within 10 feet of any property line. Conditions which could cause fire to spread to within 25 feet of a structure, such as dry vegetation, shall first be eliminated.
  • There shall be no fires which create excessive smoke or smells that carry beyond the premises
