Marine Science Lecture “Feathers: the Evolution of a Natural Miracle” 7 p.m. at the Eastsound Fire Hall. Author and bird expert Thor Hanson will share his insights into the extraordinary world of feathers. Hanson’s recent book investigates not only the evolution and mechanics of feathers, but also their cultural importance and their role in technological innovation. Darvill’s Bookstore will have copies of Hanson’s book available for purchase and signing at the Fire Hall immediately after the talk.

Orcas Island Park and Recreation District Commissioners meeting, noon to 2 p.m. at the Eastsound Fire Hall.

Dr. David Russell and Cancer Support Group, 5 p.m. in the Fireside Room of Orcas Island Community Church. Dr. Russell’s topic will be recent research on the value of Vitamin D in conjunction with the treatment of cancer. There will also be an opportunity for everyone to share. Free, confidential support group for anyone touched by cancer.Finding out how others manage the special problems that cancer brings might help you find ways to cope with the problems that come along for you.  Let’s support each other by finding courage for the journey, joy in the healing, and in hope for the future. Open Mic and Pizza Night at Doe Bay Café  Share music, spoken word, and other performances on the night when we come together in that ancient ritual of community and communion: good pizza!  Each month a local non-profit receives $1 from each pizza sold.  This month Kaleidoscope is the benefactor.  Kaleidoscope provides a high quality Preschool and Childcare environment serving many of our hard working families who are the backbone of our community. Friday, November 11, Veterans Day

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Dedication; 11:11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall. Everyone is invited! Orcas Island’s American Legion Post will dedicate its just-completed Vietnam Veterans Memorial during its annual Veterans Day ceremony. The sculpture, sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and created by local sculptor Pete Welty, was recently installed at the Voyle B. Martin American Legion Post 93, located at 793 Crescent Beach Drive.The traditional Veterans Day ceremony will be held inside the Post, beginning at 11:11. The SAL will dedicate the new memorial directly afterwards and the fly over will take place at approximately 11:45 am. Light refreshments will follow, provided by the Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary.Call Bob Cook, American Legion Post 93 Commander @ 376-5028.

“The Welcome” Public screening of welcoming veterans home from war, at 6 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Parish Hall. Introduction and post-screening discussion with Bishop Craig Anderson and viewers. All are welcome. The Welcome. The film chronicles a healing journey of a group of veterans in Southern Oregon. Veterans welcome. Subject matter not suitable for children.

Deer Harbor Community Potluck 6:30 p.m. at the Deer Harbor Community Center. The November 11 potluck is the annual Thanksgiving dinner with turkeys provided by the DHCC Women’s Auxiliary. Please bring a dish to share, your beverage, and your place setting. 376-5404
