Indian Island Marine Health Observatory Marine Research low-tide days: Monday through Thursday: Research protocols for the low tides July 30, 31 and August 1,2 with start times are as follows:
Mon., July 30 – 8:30 a.m. (-1.8) – Invertebrate Surveys
Tue., July 31 – 8:30 a.m. (-2.0) – Invertebrate Surveys
Wed., Aug. 1 – 9:30 a.m. (-1.9) – Fish Seining
Thur., Aug. 2 – 10:00 a.m. (-1.5) – Stewards on the Beach

Orcas Solid Waste Discussion Public Works Director Frank Mulcahy will host an open, informal discussion group to answer questions about the upcoming changes to the solid waste system. Residential garbage and recycling collection will be affected.
Frank will talk about the current timelines and activities in this transition period. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Eastsound Fire Hall. Contact Elizabeth Anderson at 370-0531.

Orcas Transfer Station Vendor Selection Committee Meeting at the Orcas Island Library at 3:30 p.m. Public is welcome to attend.

Wednesday, August 1

Marine Resource Committee meeting from 8:45-10:45 AM at Islanders Bank, 225 Blair Avenue, Friday Harbor Agenda includes SMP Update and Net Pens and Salmon Recovery Proposals,Technical Advisory Group Feedback and Scoring, and Citizen Input.

Brown Bag Concert with Marianne Lewis, organ, and Sharon Abreu, who will sing  “Pie Jesu” from Faure’s Requiem and “If God Be For Us” from Handel’s Messiah.  From noon to 12:30 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Eastsound. The Brown Bag Concerts fund a music scholarship program which enables students to attend a special music camp each summer.

The Hidden Costs of the Coal Economy, Dr. Claudia Oakes, an environmental consultant and faculty member of Montana State University , 5-6:30 pm, San Juan Island Grange, 52 1st Street N, Friday Harbor. Dr. Oakes will speak about Montana’s political and environmental positions in the coal economy.

Orcas Artists Studio Tour Reception, Tour 35 Orcas Artists’ Studios Aug. 17 and 18 and come to the Opening Reception at the Orcas Center Lobby and Madrona Room from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Saturday, August 4

Free Composting Workshop on San Juan Island, 11 am to 2 pm, San Juan County Fairgrounds. Learn how to build a 3-bin composting system. Sponsored by San Juan County Public Works Waste Management.

Farmer’s Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Eastsound Village Green.

“Old Fashioned Chicken Dinner” from 5 to  8 p.m. at the Eastsound fire hall. Dinner will include choice of baked or barbeque chicken, cornbread, corn on the cob, salad, dessert, lemonade and coffee. Dinner will be offered for $15 for adults and $8 for 12 years old and under. All profits will go directly to the 911 monument project.
