We have had several families of non-migratory Ana humming birds with us year round ever since 2006. That winter was a cold one and we had to microwave the humming bird juice several times that year after it froze solid even at 3:1 sugar. The Anas are the taller calmer humming birds.
Today I saw the first of the migratory Rufous humming birds that bring a much more lively, almost insane atmosphere to the air. It seems spring has truly begun!
The Anas remember the location of reliable feeders from year to year and came to our neighborhood early.

My pair arrived yesterday and immediately took over their ‘turf’ Honeysuckle on my porch. They stare at me through the window saying, “Uncle Harry, we’re back!”
Spring has sprung! Hooray!
