The event is known traditionally known as the Spaghetti Dinner, but this year on Friday May 15, from 5-6:30PM, 7th and 8th grade students at the Orcas Public School instead served tacos to the community for their 36th annual spring fundraiser.
’With the current phase of reconstruction at the school, Chef Zach Holley and the cafeteria staff have moved in to the middle school gym; limiting their kitchen resources and sharing the space with the physical education classes for the elementary and middle school. The students decided this year that tacos would transport better, so they could still hold the event given the current cafeteria situation.
Gym classes on Friday accommodated the floor being taken over by nicely decorated tables, and the kids had their classes outside in the sunshine. Everyone has had to bend a little to make things work, and Chef Zach really worked his magic to help make the annual event a hit.
The students acted as waiters and bussers and served the community and their familie, full plates of tacos with rice and bean sides, and a complete salsa bar. The popular event yielded another large turnout again this year. And it’s no wonder, as one 8th grader student sold 23 tickets alone!
It wouldn’t have happened without Chef Zach, all of the donations from Island Market, and the support from the school staff. The money goes to the middle school ASB and will help fund the 8th grade end of the year trip to Wild Waves, and an overnight stay on Sucia Island.
