Dementia Friendly Orcas surveyed islanders to understand current community strengths, service gaps, caregiver experiences, and priority needs related to dementia care on Orcas Island.
Thanks to Melissa Hartmann with Island County Public Health, Heidi Bruce of San Juan County, Orcas Senior Center, and Orcas Island Library, we were able to collect 167 survey responses and want to share the results.
The analysis reveals a strong community foundation with dedicated organizations providing meaningful support. It also highlights significant structural gaps. These survey findings provide a foundation for strategic planning and resource development to strengthen Orcas Island’s capacity to support individuals living with dementia and the caregivers who sustain them.
