Fundraising Bake Sale at Island Market on May 13, 2:30-6:30pm
||| FROM JULIE CURTIS for YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS |||
The San Juan Islands Conservation District’s Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is proud to participate in the 2025 GiveOrcas campaign, hosted by the Orcas Island Community Foundation. We are working to raise $15,000 to help cover program costs and provide stipends for our hardworking Orcas YCC crew members- local youth who dedicate their summer to environmental stewardship and conservation projects across Orcas Island. Donations can be made at www.GiveOrcas.org from May 6-18.
To help us reach this goal, Orcas YCC crew members and staff will host a community bake sale outside of Island Market on Tuesday, May 13 from 2:30- 6:30pm. Come by to enjoy delicious homemade treats, and learn more about how the program empowers island youth while protecting Orcas’ natural resources.
YCC crew members, aged 12–18, work in close collaboration with local land managers and conservation partners—including the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank, San Juan Preservation Trust, SJC Noxious Weed Board, and Moran State Park—to complete vital projects such as trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and ecosystem restoration. The program provides meaningful pathways for youth to explore careers in natural resource management, environmental science, and civic engagement.
One crew member shared: “Being part of YCC has shown me how much work goes into taking care of the land. It’s made me feel more connected to this island and to the people who care for it.”
The program’s inclusive model ensures that financial barriers do not prevent participation. Daily stipends to crew members are made possible thanks to generous donors, and every contribution makes a tangible difference in the lives of island youth.
