||| FROM SANDY BISHOP for SOLID WASTE ALTERNATIVES PROGRAM |||

SWAP (Solid Waste Alternatives Program) was established about 11 years ago at the same time as the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District (LSWDD) -– affectionately known as The Dump. SWAP is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization dedicated to providing financial and promotional support to LSWDD and waste reduction efforts across Lopez Island.

Big thanks to everyone who attended the 2024 Trashion-Fashion events in September. This night circus and family circus were hosted by SWAP and coordinated by Britney Westerfelt, along with Jamie Bair (AKA the Sheriff), Pamela Maresten, Patty Ward, Joyce Brinar and another 50 or so volunteers. The events brought in just over $15,000 in revenue. SWAP added those proceeds to the $29,000 previously raised by SWAP through the diligent efforts of past SWAP board members and volunteers, including Kim Norton, Tam Paynter and Kat Sorenson, through sales of upcycled bags, skirts, Dogs at the Dump calendars and general contributions.

Yesterday SWAP issued a $44,000 check to the Dump. A gift from Lopezians for the recently purchased used, but better-than-the old-one, backhoe/excavator. Colby White located the machine in Colville WA. It was shipped over to the west side and David Zapalac went to Anacortes to drive it home to the Lopez Dump. The machine is safer, and ten years newer than the old one.

Another good piece of news. In the November general election San Juan County reported an 87% voter turnout. The Dump received 80% approval for the Levy. Talk about showing up and turning out and making your voice heard. Thank you Lopezians. You’re the best.

Carry on and enjoy the darker slower months.
