On May 20, the Orcas Island Garden Club program will feature Colleen Burrows from Whatcom County Extension talking about small fruit production. The program begins at 10 a.m. in the Madrona Room of the Orcas Center with a brief business meeting before the presentation.
Colleen is the Integrated Pest Management Coordinator for Whatcom County Extension. She works with raspberry and blueberry farmers as well as diversified organic farmers on pest control issues with the goal of reducing pesticide use.
She completed a master’s in horticulture from Washington State University where she worked on raspberry and strawberry breeding programs. She is also involved in work with Community Foods Assessment and working with that issue with classes at Western Washington University.
