Experts have revealed the more sinister reason why a pod of 77 pilot whales may have been beached on Orkney shores

After post-mortem examinations found that the stranded whales were healthy before they were washed ashore, investigators are probing into the reasons behind it.

Around 30 whales were examined and initial findings suggest that some were had fresh stomach contents, suggesting that they were feeding nearby before becoming stuck on the shores of Tresness Beach.

Though twelve survived the initial standing, they were later euthanised after rescue efforts proved redundant.

Swimming in shallow waters, the sands would have likely made it difficult for the whales to detect the beach ahead.

But after investigators were altered to a pod of killer whales hunting in the vicinity, they believe that the pilots could have been washed up trying to escape from the predators.
