If you’re looking for a fun activity for your youngster this summer, look no further than our Seed to Sprout program! This program is for children ages 3 to 5 and is a chance for them to learn about nutrition, gardening, nature, and practice their social and creative skills. The first class is Wednesday, June 12!

You don’t need to pre-register to join – just come on by! Children will learn about plants and insects through singing, crafting, and movement. Some planned activities this summer are:

  • Exploring how to care for worms,
  • Watering plants,
  • Planting seeds and watching them grow,
  • Harvesting vegetables,
  • Learning what kinds of insects help the garden grow!

San Juan County Health & Community Services is so excited to be offering this program for its third year! Our past classes have received wonderful feedback. One parent said, “We love the openness and relaxed approach to letting the children touch and explore the garden.” Another caregiver told us that “even [their] shy granddaughters had fun.”

Seed to Sprout classes will be every other Wednesday beginning June 12 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Land and Sea Garden, between Blair Ave. and 2nd St. Ave in Friday Harbor. The complete list of class dates are:

  • June 12 and 26
  • July 10 and 24
  • Aug. 7 and 21
  • Sept. 4 and 18

Families are welcome to join the fun and a caregiver is required to remain with their child during the class. There is no deadline to register, and drop-ins are welcome for any of the classes. If English if not your family’s primary language, please let us know ahead of time so we can explore interpretation resources.

Currently this program is only scheduled for San Juan Island. Planning is underway to offer Seed to Sprout on Orcas Island as well. We will announce those dates once planning is complete.
