— from Jill Berger for The Whale Museum —

The Whale Museum and SeaDoc Society are hosting two training sessions for anyone who is interested in volunteering for the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network (SJCMMSN).

SJCMMSN responds to approximately 200 calls per year of live and dead stranded marine mammals. Volunteers will be trained to conduct field investigations of live and dead animals, mitigate the harassment of live stranded animals, assist with necropsies (i.e., animal autopsies) and educate the public.

The first session will take place on June 12 from 3:30 – 5 p.m. at the SeaDoc Society Office. The second session will take place on June 13 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at The Whale Museum. The training sessions will be identical and are free and open to the public.

For more information, call (360) 378-4710 ext. 30 or email info@whalemuseum.org. The Whale Museum is located in Friday Harbor at 62 First St. N., and the SeaDoc Society Office is located in Eastsound at 942 Deer Harbor Rd. Both organizations can be found online: The Whale Museum at www.whalemuseum.org and SeaDoc Society at www.seadocsociety.org.
