Orcas High School juniors Garett Pietsch and Chase Drake won the 2012 Science Fair’s first place scholarship award for their joint black-powder cannon.
The Funhouse Commons Science Fair held on Saturday, March 24, awarded the third prize scholarship to Christopher Ghazel for his study of lenses, and the second prize scholarship went to Max Blackadar for his study of sodium. The theme of the Science Fair this year was “Science is a Blast.”
The” Richie Moore Rocket Ship of Wonder” Best in Show award went to elementary student Trevor Wareham for his outstanding project on Biofeedback.
Pete Moe, Executive Director of the Funhouse Commons, said, “It was a great show this year, as it is every year… Everything we saw was great — great projects, great demos, great crowd.
“The highlight this year was the high school level competition. I don’t remember a more competitive year ever for the scholarships.”
“Overall the turnout was a little lighter that in past. We didn’t get as much off-island participation, and our numbers from the elementary school were down. We will work harder next fall to get the Science Fair added toteacher’s work plans.”
Orcas Island School District Superintendent and High School Principal Barbara Kline said, “Congratulations to all participating for a job well done, and a special thanks to the Funhouse Commons for hosting this event.”
