A Deer Harbor artist was among the lucky winners in the Scenic Byway Free Bus Pass Contest. Ginna Magee moved from Chicago two years ago – without a car. In response to the question asking the value of having a bus in the summertime Ginna wrote, “Last summer I made good use of the shuttle bus on Orcas, not only to get into Eastsound (eleven miles away) to do essential errands, but also to get to know my new surroundings better.”
When asked and how she intends to use her bus pass Ginna wrote: “I have been to Friday Harbor on the ferry and enjoyed walking around the town, but I really have no idea what the rest of San Juan Island is like. Some of the things I look forward to doing are: hiking around the English Camp and climbing Mt. Young; exploring the American Camp and climbing Mt. Finlayson; watching for whales from Lime Kiln Point; visiting the Pelindaba Lavender Farm and Roche Harbor Resort; and trying out the Zipline Tour! Guided walks of historical interest and learning about wildlife are also on my list.”
Reducing the congestion of additional cars on the ferry and roads is a goal of the Scenic Byway Explorer Bus project. Visitors are invited to leave their cars behind and jump on the Scenic Byway Explorer Bus to enjoy a car-free experience. By taking a quick survey HERE, you can download a 2-for-1 Explorer Pass, good for a day of exploring on Orcas or San Juan Island. Bus schedules and routes are available ONLINE.
