Dr. Amy Harley

San Juan County is pleased to announce Dr. Amy Harley has been appointed as the County’s new Local Health Officer effective April 16, 2025. Dr. Harley’s breadth and depth of experience in public health, pediatrics, and nutrition will support the County’s programs and services.  

 “We are excited to have Dr. Amy Harley join our Health & Community Services team,” said Mark Tompkins, Director of San Juan County Health & Community Services.   “Her experience as a local health officer as well as her passion for community health will be an asset to our department and community.”

Dr. Harley trained at the University of California – Davis before coming to Washington to do her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Washington. She also holds a Master’s in Public Health. Dr. Harley already serves as one of Whatcom County’s co-Health Officers. She also remains a passionate Pediatric Hospitalist at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.

Responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of the community, the County’s Local Health Officer works in coordination and consultation with the San Juan County Board of Health, Health & Community Services staff and with local organizations, such as schools and medical clinics/centers, to ensure the health and safety of county residents.

San Juan County wants to thank Dr. Herbie Duber for his support and expertise during the recruitment process. Dr. Duber will remain the Washington State Department of Health Regional Medical Officer for Northwest Washington where he supports the development of healthcare policy and programs across the state and serves as a key liaison between local public health in Northwest Washington and DOH.
