San Juan County announced at the last Board of Health meeting that Dr. Amy Harley will conclude her service as the Local Health Officer for San Juan County at the end of her current contract in 2027.
Dr. Harley has served as the shared Local Health Officer for San Juan and Whatcom Counties, providing medical leadership, public health expertise, and guidance on issues affecting the health and well-being of residents in both communities.
Due to statewide reductions in Foundational Public Health Services (FPHS) grant funds, Whatcom County has switched from a two-health officer model to a single-health officer model. As a result, Dr. Harley will no longer be able to split her responsibilities between the two counties when her current contract concludes.
“We are deeply grateful for Dr. Harley’s leadership, expertise, and commitment to protecting and improving the health of our community,” said HCS Director Mark Tompkins. “Her thoughtful guidance and dedication have been invaluable, and we thank her for the care she has provided to our residents during her tenure.”
To ensure continuity of public health leadership, San Juan County has opened a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for qualified candidates interested in serving as the County’s next Local Health Officer.
Responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of the community, the County’s Local Health Officer works in coordination and consultation with the Washington State Department of Health, San Juan County Board of Health, Health & Community Services staff, and with local organizations, such as schools and medical clinics/centers, to ensure the health and safety of county residents.
