Cyrus Habib, Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, will visit Orcas Island on Monday, July 18. He will speak at an informal event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Random Howse near the Post Office in Eastsound.

Habib currently is a State Senator representing Bellevue/Kirkland. He is a key member of the Democratic leadership team in Olympia and serves as Democratic Whip.

He developed close ties to environmental advocates in the San Juan Islands during the fight to oppose the coal export terminal near Bellingham, which he opposed. His main opponent, Steve Hobbs, supported the terminal.

Habib, a three-time cancer survivor, has been fully blind since age eight and is a strong advocate for disability rights. He is a Rhodes Scholar who graduated with highest honors from Columbia University and holds degrees from Oxford and Yale Law School.

From 2009-2013, he practiced law at the largest firm in the Northwest, Perkins Coie, where he helped small businesses and startup tech companies raise venture capital funds and license their software.

The Washington Post has named Habib one of the top 40 political leaders in the country under the age of 40.

The Democratic Party, recognizing his expertise on important issues, named him to the Platform Committee for the Democratic Convention this month. Habib has championed policies addressing climate change, income inequality, and job creation.

Habib has the endorsement of environmental groups, including the Washington Conservation Voters. He also has the support of labor, including the Washington State Labor Council and the Washington Education Association.

Many top officials, including Washington’s Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, have endorsed him.
Olga residents Don Stillman, Frank Greer, and Stephanie Solien host Habib’s appearance along with Steve and Linda Hulley of West Sound.
