Lighting in Your Orcas Garden, 10 am in the Madrona Room at Orcas Center. Orcas Island Garden Club will feature Landscape Architect, Chad Wichers. Mr. Wichers will give us some ideas concerning landscape lighting, including path lighting, up & down lighting, and lighting for safety. He has experience designing neighborhood and regional parks, community gardens, green-built projects as well as many residential gardens. Chad Wichers is a founding partner of Studio 342 Landscape Architecture and has been a lecturer in the Landscape Architecture Dept. of the University of Washington since 2005. Crosscurrents Lecture: The Higgs Boson Discovery, 5 p.m. at Episcopal Parish Hall. Orcas Crossroads is establishing a new series of seminars, called CrossCurrents, which will address more specialized interests in more intimate settings. The first CrossCurrents lecture will feature Michael Riordan who will lead a discussion on “The Higgs Boson Discovery.” Riordan is a physicist and science writer living on Orcas, whose article on the recent Higgs Boson discovery is featured in the October issue of Scientific American. Following the seminar, the discussion will continue over dinner at the New Leaf Café. Although admission is free, donations will be encouraged. Participants are asked to register online at orcascrossroads.org (but will not be turned away if they don’t). Those who join the speaker and host for dinner will be asked to pay directly for their own meal costs.

Film Presentation: Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time, 6 p.m. in the Library Community Meeting Room.

Camp Orkila’s Fall Festival and Haunted Hay Ride. Fall Festival will be from 1:00-5:30pm. They’ll have hot dogs, face painting, archery, climbing at the Climbing Tower, and much, much more! Big Bash Dinner Dance at the Senior Center from 5 to 9 p.m. Dinner at 6, music with Bruce Pavitt starts at 7. $20 per person includes appetizers, dinner and dancing! Tickets at Darvill’s and at the Senior Center in Eastsound.
